In India jewellery is often made by assembling pre-fabricated elements. Die-stamping of sheet metal is a common way of quickly and easily making any number of positive repeats of a negative pattern engraved in the die. Small decorative die-stamped units, such as flowers, are commonly used to cover the junctions of border wires and other joins. Examples of larger-scale stampings are the champa-bud forms of the champakali necklace, and mandalia, with their images of deities.
Indian Jewelry
Enamelling has also long been practised by Indian jewellers. In gold Mughal-style gem-set jewellery enamel is sometimes used on the front, generally in areas of solid colour contrasting with the stones. Characteristic of this type of jewellery, however, are the intricate, small-scale designs enamelled on the backs, where they remain unseen. Perhaps part of the explanation for this practice may be thje artisan’s delight in his own craft, but probably more important are the requirements of technology. The 22-carat gold used by Indian jewellers is very soft and subject to abrasion. Enamelling the back of an object, where it is in contact with the skin, reduces abrasion and loss of metal. In addition, the enamel itself helps to lend regidity to objects made of thin sheet gold.
