Indian Jewellery

In India jewellery is often made by assembling pre-fabricated elements. Die-stamping of sheet metal is a common way of quickly and easily making any number of positive repeats of a negative pattern engraved in the die. Small decorative die-stamped units, such as flowers, are commonly used to cover the junctions of border wires and other joins. Examples of larger-scale stampings are the champa-bud forms of the champakali necklace, and mandalia, with their images of deities.

Indian Jewelry

Enamelling has also long been practised by Indian jewellers. In gold Mughal-style gem-set jewellery enamel is sometimes used on the front, generally in areas of solid colour contrasting with the stones. Characteristic of this type of jewellery, however, are the intricate, small-scale designs enamelled on the backs, where they remain unseen. Perhaps part of the explanation for this practice may be thje artisan’s delight in his own craft, but probably more important are the requirements of technology. The 22-carat gold used by Indian jewellers is very soft and subject to abrasion. Enamelling the back of an object, where it is in contact with the skin, reduces abrasion and loss of metal. In addition, the enamel itself helps to lend regidity to objects made of thin sheet gold.

Wrist ornaments or bracelets exist in enormous variety all over India. Rigid penannular bracelets of circular or ovoid form, which are cast or forged with animal-head terminals, are an extremely archaic type. Unlike bangles, they have an opening to facilitate putting them on and taking them off. Bracelets made of a flat metal band can vary in width from narrow to very broad, cuff-like forms. Other rigid bracelet types may be made in two parts hinged together, and employ various kinds of fastenings, such as screws or movable pins. Flexible bracelets can be made from wire, woven, braided or intermeshed. Another distinct flexible type is made up of one or several strands of small units strung together on a thick cord which passes through the loops attached to each unit.

Gemstones are used with exceptional beauty in Indian Jewelry. The very concept of a ‘maharaja’ conjures up images of a rotund royal, adorned in silk and decorated with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and other glittering gems. In India, gemstones have traditionally been worn for preventive, antidotal, and therapeutic purposes. Astrologically, they correspond to the various planets. The nine gems together, the navaratna, are a symbol of the solar system. In this way, gemstones harness the energies of the planets and the sun. They have powerful properties on the wearer for they also correspond to particular celestial deities. This symbolic arrangement of the universe and space has had a lasting impact on the Indian psyche. Gemstones are a way for the wearer to manipulate celestial forces for personal benefit.

There are 9 gemstones and the number 9 is itself considered magical. Wearing all nine of the gems together in a navaratna ornament is considered the most auspicious of all jewelry.Armlets, Rings, Bangles and Pendants are the common ways to wear these, and there are some spectacular examples from the Mughal era. The number 9 is considered auspicious for it is the last of the single digits, there are 9 planets, and it is also the period of human gestation.

Amongst the 9 gemstones some gems are considered more precious than others because of their rarity. Therefore, these 9 were divided into the great stones (maharatnani), and the lesser stones (uparatnani). It’s not hard to guess which are the major stones, for they are also the most expensive ones on the market today. The former include the most precious of gemstones: diamond, pearl, ruby, sapphire and emerald. The lesser gems are the topaz, cat’s eye, coral, and hyacinth, or zircon.

One of the most popular and potent symbols in the Indian craft lexicon is the tree. It provides protection and shelter to birds, oxygen to breathe, nuts, berries, medicines, and fuel for man’s survival. Its elegant shapes and forms inspire weavers and handblock printers, wood carvers, painters, stone carvers and any other craft that requires lyrical imagery to recreate the tree according to the traditional tenets of design or make new interpretations of it. The ‘Tree of Life’ has been the subject of eloquently painted wall panels, woven carpets and sari borders. Apart from being used as a motif in varying forms, the tree gives its rich resources to wood crafters across the country. It is believed to be the abode of friendly spots and guardians and the forest has been the joyous habitat of the tribal population of India once who are not bound by the rigid norms of the Hindu society.

In Rajasthan, especially Marwar, and elsewhere ivory was used for bangles. The town of pali specialized in their production but they were used over a much wider area, and in the Punjab were worn by a bride during the first year of marriage. Because of devastating effect of the international ivory trade on wild populations of elephants, it was restricted in 1989 and substitutes are increasingly used. When the bangles are painted there is little visual difference.

Shalin Bracelets:

Marriages in India are synonymous to jewellery. The traditional jewellery of India is what makes the Indian weddings so rich and unique in their own manner. There are exclusive designs and works which complete the traditional look of the jewellery. The traditional gold jewellery is passed on for generations and families hold jewellery made many decades ago. The different jewellery includes armlets, bracelets, bangles, necklaces, earrings, fingerings, toe rings, nose rings, anklets, pendants and waistbands.

Different regions and cultures follow their unique designs and works. The south is known for its extensive temple based large deigns, the north is known for its exclusive carved designs, the west is known for its mirrored and stoned works and the east is famous for its beaded work. Many trends are taken from the Middle East regions but the designing is unique.

The amorous connotations of ornaments in Indian Culture are quite unique. The Indian concept of nayika (‘heroine in love’) signifies a woman in a range of romantic moods and states of mind and body vis-a-vis her situation with her lover – moods of union, separation, anger, silking, flirtation, jealousy and their innumerable nuances in terms of feeling and expression. A nayika in each of her changing moods is adorned differently with flowers, clothing and ornaments depending upon the changing seasons. Prakrit and Sanskrit literature is full of smiles and  metaphors signifying the passion and sensuality of nayikas. References to a nayika shaking a branch of a flowering tree as if to collect flowers, but in reality trying to attract the attention of her lover with the jingling sound of her bracelets, or to the one thumping her feet as if walking in anger, trying to announce her arrival to her lover by the sound of her anklets or to the one who wears ornaments which indicate her secret marriage or relationship with her lover are many. For example, Shilappadikaram (The ‘Ankle Braceltes’), a third century Tamil epic poem underlines the semiotics of a bracelet as follows:

Healing stones serve as valuable agents of electromagnetic energy that influences the electrochemical nature of the human organism. The contact of healing stones with the electromagnetic field of the body becomes easy when they are embedded in pure electrolytes like copper, silver and gold or when in direct contact with the skin. Healing stones work with physiochemical energy as wel as with pranic energy, whether used as jewelry or taken orally as pastes or oxides.

Healing stones absorb and produce specific energies that are related to the frequences of the light that they receive. These frequencies can be seen as colors and are related to planetary energies that go well beyond the visble light frequencies.

Astrologers and gem therapists use healing gemstones as talismans or birthstones to compensate for the loss of energy caused by weak planets or to provide more strength to the exalted favorable planets.
